    Seamen's Society is celebrating its birthday on April 2, 2016. We will be 170 years old. We have been weathering life’s storms since our inception in 1846. Our philosophy has not changed any. Today we serve over 1500 children and 800 families annually in both Staten Island and Brooklyn. We believe that every child deserves a chance.     On January 14, 2014 Seamen’s Society held its 4th Annual Scholarship Reunion at our headquarters. Ten scholarship recipients home for winter break joined staff, donors and the board of trustees for an enjoyable evening filled with good food. Excitement and laughter filled the room fueled by tidbits of everyone’s life and school experiences.

    Seamen’s Society for Children and Families Elects New Trustee

    The 167th Annual Meeting of the Board of Trustees of Seamen’s Society for Children and Families was held at their headquarters, at 50 Bay Street, on Tuesday, June 11, 2013. One new trustee, Laura Fitzsimmons Volsario, the Director of Operations at Gateway Arms Realty in St. George, Staten Island was elected to the Board of Seamen’s Society for Children and Families.

    On Thursday, October 25, 2012 Seamen’s Society held its Black & White Gala at the Vanderbilt at South Beach. This year’s Save Harbor Award honorees were Richmond County Savings Foundation, Staten Island Foundation and P.S. 19 in West Brighton. Over 225 guests were in attendance where they dined, danced, enjoyed musical entertainment and participated in a silent auction.

TUTORING DIRECTOR - TEMPORARY PART-TIME       APPLY NOW
To manage Forward through Education, an all agency tutoring program at Seamen’s Society for Children and Families from now until the end of June 2016. The program director will oversee the after-school tutoring center and maintain an education focused data base for all school age children in our foster care and prevention programs. Will also liaise with local college for ongoing recruitment of volunteers to tutor school age children and adolescents.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
• Experience with Word and Excel
• Working knowledge of public school system
• Understanding of the social service system preferred
• Keen interest in education, teaching and children
• Organizational and management skills and enthusiasm for work
• Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation

Qualifications/Requirements:
• Associate’s Degree or at least 2 years college experience working towards Bachelor’s Degree

Therapist will provide age appropriate weekly counseling to children 17 years old or younger who have witnessed domestic violence
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Engage with parents to set up appointments and plan schedule
• Supply therapy area with age appropriate toys and games
• Provide age appropriate therapeutic counseling to children
• Engage in supervision as needed with supervising therapist
• Complete paperwork necessary as required by grant
• Client advocacy and case management as necessary
• Participate in required meetings and trainings
• Run parenting groups

 Skills/Knowledge/ Abilities:
• Knowledge of the dynamics of domestic violence
• Ability to engage survivors of trauma
• Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accomodation
• Ability to collect data on agency templates

Qualifications/Requirements:
• LMSW, LCSW or Licensed Psychologist required.  FFT or MST experience is a plus
• Experience counseling children, adolescents and survivors of family violence/trauma
• Bilingual – English/Spanish required
• The Agency's standard hours are Monday-Friday 9am- 4:45pm; however must be able to work evenings as needed to meet client needs

PSYCHOLOGIST – Consultant/1 Day per week       APPLY NOW
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Complete comprehensive Psychological batteries on children and adolescents in foster care
• Ensure written reports are completed timely
• Conducts and completes initial & annual developmental and mental health screenings for children under 5

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
• Experience completing administrating, scoring, interpreting and writing comprehensive Psychological Testing batteries on children and adolescents
• Experience utilizing intellectual measures, achievement measures, projective and objective personality measures, neuropsychological measures and other testing materials. Strong diagnostic skills using DSM 5
• Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations
• Strong evaluation experience with child and adolescent population
Qualifications/Requirements:
• NYS licensed Psychologist required
• Scheduled to work in both sites based on Program needs as determined by Director



QA SPECIALIST – Staten Island       APPLY NOW
 Duties and Responsibilities:
• Compile, review, and assess data created by the Department or provided by ACS and OCFS including monthly compliance statistics and Scorecard data. This will include, but not be limited to usage of Connections, PROMIS, Options, or other data sources
• Prepare performance reports as needed for agency programs based on reviews of internally-generated or externally provided data as required. Present upon and participate in discussions of such information/data with internal and external stakeholders as appropriate
• Prepare and distribute reports regarding qualitative and quantitative data (e.g., performance outcomes, families receiving services, children/youth in care, etc) as needed and in appropriate timeframes
• Assist with Foster Care and Preventive case record reviews to assess adherence to appropriate compliance mandates and quality of practice. When required, send Alerts to appropriate program and QA staff regarding identified safety or practice concerns
• Participate in agency internal audits as needed
• Assist in the development of agency policies and procedures to ensure compliance with programmatic standards in any agency programs as needed

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
• Computer proficiency, particularly Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Legal Tracking System (LTS), Connections, and Preventive Organization Management Information System (PROMIS)
• Detail oriented with excellent verbal, written, organizational, and communication skills
• Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation
Qualifications/Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree and an understanding of Foster Care and Preventive casework required
• Master’s Degree with Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement experience preferred
• Working knowledge of child welfare policies and procedures
• Must be able to work Monday-Friday, 9:00am – 4:45pm
 


PEER ADVOCATE – Foster Care - Staten Island       APPLY NOW
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Advance youth towards their permanency goal (e.g., return to parent/relative; KinGap, adoption, etc.) and provide mentorship to foster youth
• Provide accurate information regarding the foster care system
• Facilitate support groups
• Facilitate and supervise youth while on field trips and off-site activities
• Work with collaborative partners to bring in new resources, guest speakers and other activities beneficial to youth in foster care
• Maintain attendance records for each event/activity held
• Attend staff meetings and trainings, as scheduled and deemed appropriate
• Maintain communication with PYA Supervisor and Director of Foster Care to ensure activities are in line with the youth’s service plan
• Build relationships, with youth, foster/birth parents and staff
• Escort youth on skill building excursions
• Work with youth that have transitioned out of foster care with maintaining employment, housing, etc

Skills/Knowledge/ Abilities:
• Excellent communication ,engagement, and computer skills; as well as, strong ability to empathize with others
• Ability to work independently, self-starter, enthusiastic, flexible
• Strong organizational skills and deadline oriented
• Enthusiasm and motivation to work with youth population
• Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation

Qualifications/Requirements:
• High School Diploma and NYS Driver’s license required
• Formerly in foster care
• Work schedule hours may vary, Mon – Fri, flexible hours including evenings and some weekends
• Our Agency operates in 2 locations: Staten Island and Brooklyn. In rare occasions you may be temporarily transferred to either site to meet program needs
