Seamen’s Society for Children and Families is a private, not-for-profit agency and approved by the IRS as a 501 (c) 3 tax exempt charitable organization.
Founded in 1846 as the Society for the Relief of Destitute Children of Seamen, Seamen’s Society for Children and Families has provided innovative and effective solutions that enable children to survive and thrive. It was one of the first organizations in the country to care for abused and abandoned children in foster homes rather than in institutions.
Today we are a full service child welfare agency serving over 5000 children and families in New York City. Seamen’s programs protect and care for our most vulnerable children while strengthening families to overcome alcohol, substance abuse, domestic violence and other family problems that can threaten a child’s safety and future.
Seamen’s Society for Children and Families is funded through contracts with New York City, New York State, the Federal Government, grants from the United Way of New York City and foundations; and donations from concerned individuals and companies.
Seamen’s strives to fulfill our mission, to provide the highest quality services in the community to strengthen and preserve families so that children and adults have the opportunity to realize their full potential. We accomplish this everyday with a staff of over 160 people who provide caring and professional services in both Staten Island and Brooklyn.
We are proud that we were able to accomplish the following in 2010:
♦Managed the successful adoption of 42 children
♦Expanded psychological services to child witnesses of domestic violence through a grant from Richmond County Savings Foundation and the Verizon Foundation
♦Forward Through Education, a tutoring program has been launched on Staten Island for Seamen’s children and children from the community
♦Our 13th Annual Scholarship Dinner provided 20 new and on-going scholarships to recent high school graduates and college students already in the program
♦Double honors were received by our Family Day Care Program: highest possible ratings were awarded for the thirteenth consecutive year and one of its Day Care providers, Rossana Nevels, was named Provider of the Year for New York City
