Welcome

Nancy Vomero Founded in 1846, Seamen’s Society for Children and Families has been serving Staten Island for a very long time. “We are actually Staten Island’s oldest charity,” says President and CEO Nancy Vomero, who acknowledges that there is some friendly dispute with Snug Harbor involving technicalities over who actually holds the title. As its name suggests, the agency wasestablished to “afford relief and protection to the destitute children of seamen… by providing an asylum for them with proper arrangements for their health, comfort and education.”

May is National Foster Care Month

Foster Care National Foster Care Month is a time to celebrate and thank those who work with our nation’s children. It is also a time to focus on the foster children who wait in foster homes for permanent adoptive families, as well as those children who are turning 18 and aging out.
National Foster Care Month originated in 1988 when the National Foster Parent Association persuaded then-Sen. Strom Thurmond to introduce a resolution to proclaim May as National Foster Care Month. President George H.W. Bush issued an annual proclamation during each year of his presidency, providing an impetus for state, county and city proclamations. The main focus of these early efforts was appreciation and recognition of the tremendous contributions of foster parents across the nation.
In the 1990’s, National Foster Care Month focused more on the needs of the older child, especially those about to age out of the system. Under the leadership of the National Foster Care Coalition and Casey Family Programs, the campaign became a significant part of the drumbeat that ultimately resulted in the passage of the Chafee Foster Care Independence Act.
National Foster Care Month heightens visibility for the issue and provides a strong outreach and recruitment platform for individuals and organizations working to support children and families throughout the year.
If you are interested in providing a loving home and want to be a foster parent please call Seamen’s Society for more information.
